As a power supply manufacturer, we recognize the three key features that drive market acceptance of embedded and external power supplies: size, cost, and certification compliance.

Though size and cost are certainly key features in power supply selection, uninterrupted certification compliance is perhaps the most important long term consideration given power supply efficiency and safety standards are in a perpetual state of evolution.

The most notable update in 2020 for power supplies used with Information Technology Equipment and Audio/Video Equipment is the International Electrotechnical Commission’s (IEC) move to 62368-1.

This standard supplants two existing safety standards, 60950-1 and 60065, and has a harmonized implementation date of December 20, 2020.

What does this mean for hardware organizations purchasing power supplies?

Now is the time for hardware organizations to locate 62368-1 certified models and begin qualification testing.

External wall and desktop adapters are user facing, therefore, any change to the power supply could affect other aspects of the product. This includes, and is not limited to, packaging materials, product manuals, and marketing collateral.

The end device and new power solution will also need to be tested as a system for conducted and radiated emissions to ensure FCC standards are met.

Since standards governing power supply performance are constantly in flux, it is important to select a partner who is monitoring and adapting to a changing regulatory environment.

How is SEACOMP adapting to the IEC 62368-1 update?

We have been well aware of the coming regulatory change. We have planned in advanced to ensure that customers purchasing HDP Power power supplies will not see any setbacks from this update.

We have proactively ensured that all of the power supply offerings moving forward are IEC 62368-1 certified. This includes power supplies that we manufacture in-house: the MedITE Medical and ITE Wall Adapter and the Qb 5W Wall Adapter.

If your product requires a new power solution in order to meet the IEC 62368-1 standard, we would be happy to assist in sourcing the right solution for you. Contact us to learn more.
